
The CBA is a professional, voluntary organization which was formed in 1896, and incorporated by a Special Act of Parliament on April 15, 1921. Today, the Association represents 38,000 lawyers, judges, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada, of which more than 6,400 are members of the BC Branch. The purpose of the Association is to:

Blakes plays a leading role in promoting the delivery of pro bono legal services and has one of Canada's largest law firm pro bono programs. Blakes was among the first national law firms to adopt a formal policy that treats time spent on pro bono legal services as equivalent to billable hours, and to form a national committee to proactively seek pro bono opportunities. As such, Blakes was awarded the Canadian National Pro Bono Law Firm Award at the National Pro Bono Conference in Vancouver. Blakes was also ranked number one in the BC Law Firm Pro Bono Guide for Students for its pro bono initiatives and policies. Jennifer Spencer, an Associate in our Vancouver office, has recently been recognized as "Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year" by Pro Bono Law of BC.
